This Summer for six weeks somewhereto_ will be reclaiming the high street with a UK-wide project called somewhereto_ re:store (High Street Heist.)

Hot Tap Media and Ice Cream Architecture both deliver somewhereto_ for Scotland and we’ll be working together to take over an empty store in the city centre of Glasgow. DNA have kindly donated us a space in the Merchant City from the 20th of July till the end of August. We’re inviting young people aged 16-25 to do what they love within the space.

We want to hear what you would like to see happen in the space, and are inviting young people to respond to our brief survey. Please let us know what you think we should do in the space, and register an interest in using the space for your own activity, through our online survey. One entry will be picked at random to win a £20 gift voucher as a little thank you.

For 6 weeks the high street is ours for the taking – so what would you like to see happen in your city?

Fill in our short survey monkey here and follow @somewhereto_SCT for more updates on our #re:store #highstreetheist

karen gillan and stanley weber in not another happy endingToday is a big day for Not Another Happy Ending, a gorgeous romantic comedy set in Glasgow and starring Karen Gillan and Stanley Weber. NAHE was one of the first films we worked on as community managers, and so a project very close to our hearts. We’ve helped it grow from a great idea, to an active community, a vibrant crowd-funding campaign, and now, a thriving online audience of fans who can’t wait to see the film. Today they release their official trailer to that fanbase. Take a look:

We’ll be joining in the conversations on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube with the NAHE community today. Maybe see you out there?

Since the announcement of Matt Smith’s departure as the current Doctor Who, speculation is rising that the producers may cast a female actor in the role – a first for the program. Steven Moffat has hinted in the past the next Doctor could be female, and according to Digital Spy, producers have stated that “All actors, no matter their sex or race, will be considered”. We reckon there are plenty of brilliant UK actresses fit for the job. Here are some of our top picks. Cast your vote and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Sophie Okonedo

Sophie Okonedo as Sithandra in Aeon Flux

Smart, enigmatic and with a great range, Okonedo would be an ideal Doctor Who. Having won a BAFTA for her role in Hotel Rwanda, she’s a serious actor with a lot of klout. We can totally see her in the role. But would her experience of playing Liz Ten in the series put off the producers?

Sally Hawkins

Hawkins would bring warmth, lightness and humour to the role. Although probably best known as Poppy in Happy-Go-Lucky, Hawkins has an extensive career and real gravitas. Her recent roles have been of a historical fiction bent – is she geek enough for Doctor Who?

Olivia Coleman

Olivia Coleman and David Tennant in BroadchurchAlready tipped as a favourite  to become the first female Doctor Who, Coleman is one of the best actresses working in the UK just now. She stormed with National Television Awards with her performance in (the equally brilliant) Twenty Twelve last month. We can already picture her as the Doctor.

Tilda Swinton

Scottish, quirky, strong, a little bit ethereal – there’s a lot to recommend Swinton for the job. We think she would bring a darker edge to the role, and can see her really grasping the character and making it her own. But are we ready for that to happen?

Sue Perkins

SkiFind launched an online campaign to get Perkins instated in the Doctor’s shoes. She certainly looks the part, and has a big backing. But does she have the acting experience to make a convincing Doctor? If we’re going to expand our net to include presenters, let’s also throw whip-sharp TV panellist and professional poker player Victoria Cohen in there too, we say.

Helen Mirren

What can you say about Mirren? A glittering legend of the screen, she’s the go-to actor for everything from queen roles (she’s played three), Shakespeare and rom-coms alike, and loved by all. Of course she’s already tipped to be the new Doctor Who, and she’d play it amazingly.

Who would you pick? Let us know your suggestions in the comments below, or tweet us at @hottapmedia.

After a world premiere at Glasgow Film Festival back in February, a slot at Tartan Week in New York, and a successful regional tour across Scotland, We Are Northern Lights will be screening in Cineworld cinemas across the country – making it the first Scottish documentary to receive a theatrical release from a commercial cinema chain!

The film is the culmination of a process led by Creative Director, Nick Higgins, that began during the Year of Creative Scotland. We Are Northern Lights asked the people of Scotland to capture their unique perspectives of Scotland on film and submit them for selection. Contributors were asked 3 questions.

-What do you see?

-What do you wish you had seen?

-What would you like to see?

We worked with the team to set the digital strategy, support the social media managers and make sure the website was optimised for social interactivity, and also gave workshop leaders a mini masterclass on how to use social media to promote their workshops. The project received over 15,000 submissions with over 300 hours of footage from a wide range of participants, from experienced film makers to people who just picked up their phone and wanted to share their experiences about Scotland. The submissions were finally whittled down to 121 co-directors whose footage and stories made the final cut.

From Friday May 3rd, We Are Northern Lights will be released by Cineworld across all their Scottish cinemas, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Falkirk. It’s a fantastic achievement that a Scottish documentary is getting a commercial cinema release, and paves the way for more Scottish independent films to get wider releases and reach a whole new audience.

Nick Higgins, Creative Director of the film said:

“I’m delighted that We Are Northern Lights is the first ever Scottish documentary to be released by the Cineworld chain. In comparison to the films they usually show we are a micro-budget independent, but what we offer is a unique viewing experience. As with the very origins of filmmaking, the film allows us to watch ourselves up on the big screen and that is a hugely moving, very funny and enormously enjoyable experience. It has something for everyone, so I hope people will bring their gran and the kids and take pleasure in watching what is in many ways a national home movie.”

We Are Northern Lights arrives in cinemas at a time when Scotland stands poised to take the most momentous decision in its history. Just at the moment the country is asking “who are we?” the film seeks to answer that question by letting the Scots speak for themselves. This ground-breaking release by Cineworld gives even more Scots the chance to rediscover their home through eyes of those who live here.

We Are Northern Lights hits cinema just in time for the bank holiday weekend. You can buy tickets for selected cinemas in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Falkirk directly from the Cineworld website.

Glasgow-based rom-com Not Another Happy Ending has been announced as the closing film of this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. The film is directed by John McKay (Crush, We’ll Take Manhattan), produced by Claire Mundell (Crying With Laughter, Weekend) of Synchronicity Films, co-produced by Wendy Griffin (Wasted) and written by David Solomons (The Great Ghost Rescue, Five Children and It). Hot Tap Media has been working on the project for over a year now as digital manager, and we are absolutely delighted by the announcement.

Stanley Weber and Karen Gillan in Not Another Happy Ending

Described by Producer Claire Mundell as “Unashamedly upbeat, romantic and funny”, Not Another Happy Ending stars Karen Gillan as a blocked novelist who can only write when she’s miserable, and Stanley Weber as the publisher who sets about trying to get her writing again. Mundell says:

“We want audiences to be charmed and leave the cinema feeling great, so it’s fitting that our film will be a very happy finale to what will be an exceptional year at the Festival.”

Hot Tap Media has worked with Synchronicity Films on the project since late 2011, generating over 12million page impressions and over 20,000 unique users on their Twitter and Facebook profiles, running online competitions and contests, helping establish their website and blog, and raising over $22,000 for the film through a busy and popular IndieGoGo campaign. The film now has a solid and loyal community of fans who can’t wait to see the film. We really hope they like it!

Not Another Happy Ending premieres at EIFF on 30th June 2013. We’ll be live tweeting from the screening, where we hope that some of the stars of the film will be in attendance. You can follow the blog and sign up for updates at www.notanotherhappyending.com.

Glasgow could never be accused of not having anything on. It’s a hub of lively activity for pretty much any age range. Apart from perhaps teenagers. Not to worry though – we’re joining forces with new company U18, who has them covered with their dynamic launch event next week at SWG3.

From the 9th to the 12th of April U18 will be taking over the super cool SWG3 in Glasgow leading up to their launch party on the Friday night. Sick and tired of there being a limited amount of events for teenagers in Scotland, U18 aspires to promote the freshest under-eighteen talent in Scotland and help them develop new skills. By promoting them via their site they want to help connect young people throughout Scotland with the tools to make their dreams a reality.

Drawing influence from urban and street culture U18 will be running a series of free workshops for young people on everything from break dancing to DJing and graffiti art. The project will give young people aged 13-18 a safe environment in which to enjoy themselves, meet  like-minded people and learn new skills. The launch event kicks off Friday 12th April at 5pm. Headliners include legendary Scottish DJ and long time ambassador for urban music in Scotland Paul N’Jie – known for supporting some of the biggest names in the music industry including the likes of Kanye West, Pharrell and Rhianna – as well as the uber talented Sean Reid. A few weeks ago Creative Clyde launched their ‘Glasgow Inspires’competition – asking young businesses to reinterpret the Creative Clyde ‘C’ logo for a chance to win £2000 for their business. Our entry, designed by Kyle Morrison, is now shortlisted, and we need your help – vote for Kyle, and if we win, we’ll be able to offer Kyle a paid internship at Hot Tap.

We at Hot Tap are pretty much based in the heart of Glasgow’s Creative hub down at Pacific Quay – so naturally we were all about entering a competition that celebrated Glasgow’s talented and thriving creative community.

The competition asked for companies to reinterpret the Creative Clyde’s distinctive ‘C’ logo – using anything from illustration, film, photography – the only limit was the entrants’ imaginations. We love the current Creative Clyde logo by Dundee based illustrator Johanna Basford via The Leith Agency and how it encapsulates the diversity of Scottish Enterprise but the ‘C’ logo was looking for a change. The Creative Clyde ‘C’ logo is after all a blank canvas – designed to be able to adapt different designs and evolve with Glasgow’s growing creative community.

We’d recently been working with young aspiring graphic designer Kyle Morrison – helping him find spaces to work from and show off his designs via somewhereto_. We loved his artistic flair so when the Creative Clyde competition came around we gave Kyle the chance to take the helm.

Taking inspiration from the digital and creative sectors of Creative Clyde Kyle came up with a few designs including circuit boards and binary before finally settling on a blue QR coded design for his entry – creating a code that can be scanned from the Creative Clyde ‘C’ and directing the user to the Creative Clyde website.
Kyle said:

“When I was researching for ideas for my design, I considered what I thought ‘Creative Clyde’ symbolises. I wanted to produce a new creative, cutting edge design that represents all things in modern technology. To me, most modern technology involves interaction and this is why I wanted to incorporate this into my design. This competition has allowed me to share my talent and has prepared me for more experiences like this in the future. I would love to win as I believe it will boost my confidence and capabilities allowing me to grow as a designer. ”

The submissions closed on the 28th of March and there were some really amazing designs incorporating illustration, video and photography from some of Glasgow’s most enterprising young creatives. We’ve been waiting with baited breath for the short list to be announced and we can reveal that Kyle’s design has scored a place in the final five!

We couldn’t be more happy for Kyle and we really love his design. Voting opens today and will continue until the 10th of April (that’s seven days to get your votes in folks.) We love Kyle’s design and if we win we’re going to use some of the £2000 to create a paid internship for Kyle at Hot Tap Media.

You can vote for Kyle via the Creative Clyde Facebook App here. The winner will be announced the week commencing 8th of April! Keep your fingers crossed for us!
